Interview with Tevin
Q: Congratulations on winning the Positive Impact Award! What does receiving this recognition mean to you personally and for your mission as an author?
A: It’s confirmation that a story woven from my own struggles now lives as a source of strength for others. It reminds me that stories aren’t just meant to be told; they’re meant to move people forward, to spark hope, and to help them face obstacles they thought were insurmountable. It makes me firmly believe that I created something that will outlast me, something that will continue to inspire and heal others for generations to come.
Q: Forging Your Inner Diamond is such a powerful metaphor. What inspired the idea of Serena’s mountain-climbing journey as a way to tell a story of resilience and healing?
A: Mountains symbolize the struggles of everyday life, those towering challenges that make us feel small, powerless, or stuck. Growing up with struggles, I learned to reframe them: when a mountain appeared, I told myself, “You’ve been given this mountain so you can show others it can be climbed or moved.” The act of overcoming becomes bigger than you. What you overcome becomes someone else’s hope. ⛰️
Q: Serena encounters elemental forces that mirror grief, doubt, and fear. If you had to pick one of those forces that challenged you most in your own journey, which would it be—and how did you overcome it?
A: For me, the greatest force was grief. I began this book not long after losing my grandmother. Three years later, I published it on my 30th birthday, never imagining that same year I’d lose my father on Christmas Day. In him, I lost not only my dad but my best friend in life. Writing this story gave me a rock to stand on when grief sank me to my lowest point. The book became more than a creative work; it became my companion in loss and continues to guide me as I heal.
Q: You’ve created a book that’s both metaphorical and deeply practical. What’s one piece of wisdom from Serena’s journey that you personally carry with you every day?
A: The heart of the book is captured in this line: “Your life is no worse for its scars, your greatest beauty actually lies in them, and I hope you tell me their stories someday.” I carry that with me daily. Scars are stories waiting to be told, and within them lies the power to heal and uplift others. I believe when we share the truth of our scars, we transform pain into possibility, for ourselves and others.
Thank you to you, Infinite Generations, for giving us a space to share our stories and scars to inspire hope in others.

Q: Who were some of your real-life guides or mentors that helped you along your transformational path—and how did they shape the book’s message?
A: I owe so much to my parents and grandmother, who believed in me and sacrificed to make my education possible. Beyond family, mentors in college pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone. One defining moment came when I was chosen to deliver a commencement address through an academic program called The Washington Center. I was terrified, but a mentor named Mashaal worked with me for nights on end to shape my message. That speech, themed around diamonds, forever changed how I saw myself. It was the first time I realized my voice could inspire others. That moment planted the seed for everything I do today as a storyteller, speaker, and author.
Q: Many readers have said the book found them “exactly when they needed it.” Was there a personal moment in your own life when writing this story became your own form of healing or self-discovery?
A: Absolutely. Writing Forging Your Inner Diamond was never just about creating a story, it was about surviving my own. Every chapter I wrote felt like breathing life back into myself while navigating grief. It became a mirror, reflecting lessons I needed to hear in the very moment I was writing them. In many ways, the book healed me first so that it could heal others in the future.
Q: Many people today are struggling with grief, uncertainty, or feeling stuck. If a reader could take away just one core lesson from Forging Your Inner Diamond, what would you want it to be?
A: That every breakdown carries the possibility of a breakthrough. Sometimes we have to return to the state of “coal” before we can become diamonds again. Just like cycle of the seasons, life will cycle through periods of coal and diamonds. Coal reminds us that when we hit our lowest, darkest moments, we are open to the greatest change. Every diamond is cut differently, and the most beautiful thing we can do is embrace our unique shape and shine.
Q: You’ve inspired so many through your story—how has writing this book changed you?
A: It gave me the courage to say, “I am an author,” even before the book was published. And it reminded me that anyone can reinvent themselves with one small step. If you want to be a writer—write. If you want to be a singer—sing. Transformation starts not with a title, but with action.
Q: You shared our quote, “These awards aren’t just trophies—they’re testimonies to the power of story to move the world forward.” What about that message resonated most with you, and how does it connect to your own journey as an author?
A: That quote spoke to me deeply because I never set out to write a book just for the title of “author.” I wrote it to create something lasting, something that would speak into people’s lives for generations to come. Your quote reminds me that this journey was never about recognition; it was about testimony. Trophies sit on shelves, but testimonies live in people and are passed on from generation to generation like a sacred torch and flame.
Q: Your book cover is striking and perfectly aligned with Forging Your Inner Diamond. What inspired the design and color choices?
A: I wanted the cover to feel both magical and timeless, so I chose a royal blue and gold color palette. The design features four subtle lines of symbols, drawn from the ancient Phoenician alphabet, which spell the four key lessons of the book. At the center stands a human figure, symbolizing all of us on the lifelong journey of forging our inner diamond. Coal lies within us because growth is always messy but the process is what makes us ultimately transform into that diamond. The cover really testifies the theme of the book: trial, triumph, and transformation.
Q: What’s next for you? Do you see yourself expanding Serena’s story, writing more books, or carrying this message into new projects or platforms?
A: I recently published a children’s book titled Ambitious Archie in honor of my father. It explores the theme of legacy, not as something we leave for someone, but as something we instill in others every day.
You can check out more about it through the link below:
Beyond books, I’m also passionate about speaking, mentoring, and collaborating in spaces where people can share their own stories of transformation.
Q: Every book teaches its author something in the process of writing. What did Forging Your Inner Diamond teach you about yourself, your craft, or even the story you set out to tell?
A: Patience. Writing taught me that meaningful things can’t be rushed. Like baking, you can’t pull the cake out of the oven too soon if you want it to taste just right. The same is true of stories. They need time, care, and stillness to reach their full flavor. I learned to trust the process, knowing that slow growth often produces the strongest of quality results, as powerful as a diamond.
Q: Since publishing, has any reader response—encouraging, surprising, or deeply personal—touched you in a lasting way?
A: Every single message warms my soul. Whenever I get a text, email, or tag saying the book touched someone’s life, it feels like a miracle. One moment that stays with me is when a friend posted: “Tevin, you don’t know how much your book meant to me. It was full of wisdom, and I saw myself in Serena’s journey.” Knowing that someone connected so deeply with the character makes every hour I spent writing worth it.
Q: Is there anything beyond what we’ve discussed that you’d like readers to know?
A: I’d love for readers to know that storytelling isn’t reserved for authors, it’s for all of us. Whether you’re a fan of uplifting stories, slice-of-life shows, or just someone who carries scars, your story matters. If you’d like to connect, you can find me on Instagram @talkwithtevin or through my website talkwithtevin.com. I’d be honored to hear your story, too.
